Wanggaard Wishes Wisconsin Sportsmen a Safe and Successful Hunt

Questions his opponent’s attempt to restrict public access to state hunting land

Van Wanggaard issued the following statement regarding the state’s annual gun deer hunt:

“On the eve of a great Wisconsin tradition, I want to wish Wisconsin’s sportsmen and sportswomen safe and happy hunting over the next 9 days.

Wisconsin citizens set the national standard for responsible & successful hunting, stewardship of the state’s land and natural resources, and attention to pressing wildlife issues. Over 600,000 Wisconsinites and out-of-state visitors took part in last year’s gun season, killing over 350,000 deer.

I decided to enter the race for state senate because of my dissatisfaction with the representation our current state senator, John Lehman, was providing the citizens of the 21st District. His stance on public hunting land is one of those areas where we disagree.

As a member of the committee that crafts the state budget, Lehman voted to eliminate the requirement that state stewardship lands be publically accessible for hunting and recreation. Luckily, this provision was thrown out before passage of the final version of the budget. Lehman also voted to eliminate the requirement that the DNR publish a directory of all stewardship lands, a direct attempt to make it harder for Wisconsinites to locate and utilize the pristine land that tens of thousands of hunters, hikers, and skiers use every year.

I am proud to live in a state with such a storied hunting tradition, and I will stand up for hunters’ rights as a member of the state senate. I am looking forward to hearing the success stories from my friends and relatives when they return home, but in the meantime, best of luck and safe travels to our state’s hunters.”

Wanggaard currently serves as a Racine County Board Supervisor and is running for the 21st State Senate District seat.
